Background of the study
Language revitalization efforts among Tiv speakers have increasingly focused on the role of morphology in restoring and maintaining linguistic heritage. Tiv, a language rich in morphological complexity, exhibits intricate processes of affixation, compounding, and reduplication that are essential for its expressive capacity (Jatau, 2023). In recent decades, cultural and educational initiatives have aimed to reinvigorate Tiv by emphasizing traditional morphological practices. These efforts are supported by community programs, local media, and academic research, all of which underscore the importance of morphology in conveying nuanced meanings and cultural identity (Gbajumo, 2024). This study examines how revitalization programs incorporate morphological training to enhance language proficiency and promote intergenerational transmission. Fieldwork in Tiv communities reveals that a deep understanding of morphological structures facilitates the learning of vocabulary and grammar, thereby strengthening overall language competence (Madu, 2025). By documenting these practices, the research seeks to highlight the critical role of morphology in language revitalization and to provide recommendations for policy and curriculum development that support sustainable language maintenance.

Statement of the problem
Despite ongoing revitalization efforts, there is limited empirical evidence on the effectiveness of incorporating morphology into Tiv language revitalization programs. Observations suggest that a lack of focus on morphological training may hinder language acquisition and fluency among younger generations (Jatau, 2023). This gap poses challenges for language planners and educators attempting to revive Tiv while preserving its rich linguistic features. The absence of systematic research on morphological instruction in revitalization efforts limits the ability to develop comprehensive strategies that address both linguistic competence and cultural identity (Gbajumo, 2024). Consequently, there is a need for focused investigation into the role of morphology in enhancing language revitalization outcomes, ensuring that revitalization initiatives are both effective and culturally resonant (Madu, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

To evaluate the role of morphological instruction in Tiv language revitalization.

To document traditional morphological processes used by Tiv speakers.

To propose strategies for integrating morphology into language revitalization programs.

Research questions:

How does morphology contribute to Tiv language proficiency?

What traditional morphological processes are most effective in language revitalization?

How can educational programs better incorporate morphology to support language maintenance?

Research Hypotheses:

Emphasis on morphology significantly enhances Tiv language acquisition.

Traditional morphological processes are crucial for effective language revitalization.

Integrated morphological training leads to improved intergenerational language transmission.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it highlights the vital role of morphology in the revitalization of the Tiv language. Its findings will inform educators, community leaders, and policymakers, thereby supporting sustainable language maintenance and cultural preservation (Jatau, 2023; Madu, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to assessing the role of morphology in language revitalization among Tiv speakers. It focuses exclusively on morphological instruction and does not extend to other linguistic features.

Definitions of terms:

Language Revitalization: Efforts aimed at reviving and maintaining endangered or declining languages.

Morphology: The branch of linguistics concerned with the structure of words.

Tiv: A language spoken by the Tiv people in Nigeria.
